Matthieu Aikins is a journalist whose feature writing and photography have appeared in such US, Canadian, British, French and Indian publications as Harper's Magazine, the Walrus, the Guardian, the Globe & Mail, the National Post, the Coast, Courrier International, the Toronto Sun, the Caravan, Bad Idea Magazine, and on CBC's 'The National' and Global TV's 'National News'.

As an international freelance journalist, he has reported from geopolitical hotspots like Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan for Harper's Magazine, the Walrus, the National Post and the Globe & Mail.

Matthieu has recently received a number of awards, including a 2010 National Magazine Award in Canada for 'Best New Creative Talent' for his article 'Last Stand in Kandahar', which appeared on the cover of the November 2010 issue of the Walrus. The article was also nominated for and received honorable mentions in the 'Investigative Reporting' and 'Politics & Public Interest' categories.

In 2009, for his long-form account of traveling alone through Afghanistan, he received the Canadian Association of Journalists prize for feature writing, as well as a silver prize for Enterprise Reporting at the Atlantic Journalism Awards. In 2008, Matthieu was the winner of the CAJ's award in the Community Newspaper category, and the Atlantic Journalism Award for Enterprise Reporting. He was a finalist for the CAJ's Print Feature category, and also received the Dalton Camp Award for essays on journalism.

Matthieu is currently at a two-year fellowship at New York University where he is completing a master's degree in Near Eastern Studies. His academic interests include the geopolitics of South and Central Asia, and the future of journalism and new media. On the latter subject, he is fortunate enough to have worked last year with Jay Rosen and the innovative Studio 20 program. He splits his time between New York and Afghanistan.
